Yet as emissions standards have grown stricter, many new cars now include an exhaust gas recirculation system. This system cycles exhaust back through the engine, thus reducing nitrogen oxide levels.

The key component in this system is the exhaust gas recirculation valve, or EGR valve. Unfortunately, if your EGR ceases to work properly, serious problems may ensue. If you would like to boost your automotive knowledge, keep reading. This article outlines three common causes of EGR valve problems.

1. Faulty Temperature Sensor

As discussed above, the most important goal of the exhaust gas recirculation system involves reducing nitrogen oxide levels. Yet your EGR valve also ensures ideal fuel efficiency by helping to regulate the temperature and pressure inside of your engine cylinders. To deliver the best results, your EGR valve only opens up at certain key times.

In order to know when to open and close, your EGR valve relies on the information it receives from the EGR temperature sensor. As engine temperatures rise, the EGR valve opens progressively wider to compensate. Once engine temperatures have cooled, the EGR valve then closes again.

Unfortunately, catalytic converters have a some what delicate physical structure and can suffer damage that impacts their ability to clean your exhaust. 1. Have Your EGR Valve Inspected
A key part of your engine's exhaust system goes by the name of the exhaust gas recirculation valve, or EGR valve for short. The EGR valve recirculates a portion of exhaust back through your engine. This allows your engine to capitalize on any unburned fuel that had originally passed into the exhaust without combusting.

The EGR valve helps to ensure optimal fuel efficiency. In addition, the EGR valve promotes cooler combustion temperatures. By keeping combustion temperatures below 1100 degrees, your car produces a much smaller amount of the dangerous substance known as oxides of nitrogen. When an EGR valve fails, combustion temperatures rise, leading to hotter exhaust. These temperatures often end up literally melting the inside of your catalytic converter, leaving it incapable of cleaning your exhaust. Clogs, leaks, and damaged hoses can all impact the performance of your EGR valve.

2. Never Use Silicone Sealants on Your Exhaust System
In order to ensure high efficiency, a car engine must keep air leaks at an absolute minimum. Leaks may occur anywhere two components link together since it can be difficult to achieve a truly air-tight seal using mechanical fasteners alone. For this reason, mechanics almost always use sealants when installing flanges and gaskets.

Silicone sealants have gained popularity in recent decades, thanks to their durable nature and relative ease of installation. Yet silicone sealants have a significant drawback, in that they can only handle temperatures of up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit. Silicone sealants work fine in lower temperature parts of your engine like the oil pan and intake manifold.

Yet silicone can easily burn when used to seal components on the exhaust side of your system. As silicone burns, it out gases, often causing a film of silicone to form on your oxygen sensor. This coating makes it hard for the sensor to correctly control the air-to-fuel ratio inside your engine.

As a result, your car may end up allowing too much fuel into the engine. This condition, known as rich fuel, results in higher than acceptable exhaust temperatures. Just as with a bad EGR valve, these temperatures will ultimately damage your catalytic converter. Therefore, only products with appropriately high-temperature ratings should be used to seal the exhaust side of your engine.

3. Watch Your Exhaust
Another common source of catalytic converter failures goes by the name of oil fouling. Simply put, in a well-working car, engine oil should never enter the catalytic converter. When it does, it forms deposits in the converter, plugging up the small holes through which exhaust flows. Your car tires are the part of your vehicle that receives the most wear and tear since they are in constant contact with the road. This means that tires will wear down over time, which can significantly affect the operation of your vehicle.

Understanding the warning signs associated with tires that are near the end of their life span can help you change them when necessary. This will help you avoid suddenly suffering from a flat tire and being stranded on the side of the road.

1. Extreme Wear

Tires that have been on your vehicle for a prolonged period will experience excessive wear, which makes them much more fragile. You can tell how worn your tires are by inspecting the tread on the tire.

There are two main methods for determining the wear of your tires. Newer tires will have wear bars installed in the tread, which are little risers of rubber that run perpendicular to the tread of your tire: once the tread becomes level with this bar, your tires should be replaced.

Braking distance is one of the biggest factors that determine a car's safety. When a deer crosses the road, a child runs into the street or a car suddenly stops, you have to be able to stop in time to avoid a collision. Here's a look at three systems that affect your car's ability to brake quickly.

1. The Brakes Themselves

The braking system impacts your car's ability to brake. Without a working braking system, you'll be unable to stop as quickly as needed. In some cases, you might not be able to stop at all.

Many drivers, however, aren't familiar with the different parts of their car's braking system and how the various parts impact braking distance. Some of the parts in your car's braking system are:

Pads and rotors: which create friction to actually bring your car to a stop
Drums: which is another way to create friction that stops your car
Brake fluid: which is required to work the hydraulic braking system
Hoses, clamps and calipers: which deliver brake fluid to the brakes

Your car's pads, rotors and drums should all be in good condition. They shouldn't squeak or scrape, and if they do it is a sign they're worn and will soon create less friction. Additionally, there shouldn't be any rust on the pads, rotors or drums. Rust reduces how much friction is generated when the brakes are applied,

Hoses, clamps and calipers should be free of leaks, and the brake fluid should be full, or at least above the minimum amount required. Leaks lower the levels of brake fluid, and the hydraulic system can lose pressure if brake fluid levels become too low. When a hydraulic system loses pressure, it stops working.

2. The Shocks and Struts

Shocks and struts absorb vertical forces placed on your car. They're mostly known for absorbing bumps, and minimizing up-and-down movements in order to make a ride smoother. The absorption they provide is for more than comfort, though, and it doesn't only come into play when you drive over a bump. The shocks and struts also help when braking.

When your car's brakes are applied, the car's momentum drives the nose of the car toward the ground. This places a greater force on the front wheels, which has two effects. First, the car takes longer to brake because each of the four wheels isn't being fully utilized. Second, the steering is temporarily distorted because of the increased force on the front wheels.

Of course, this impact is most pronounced when you slam on the brakes. Often, this is when you need to stop suddenly and may have to swerve.

Thus, the increased braking distance and distorted steering can become a serious safety issue.
